Director Shares Insights on Success and Season 2

Director Lee Jang-hoon, who also spearheaded the project, recently sat down with Hankook Ilbo at Tving’s headquarters in the Mapo District of Seoul. He spoke about the success of the show and the potential for a second season.

Study Group, which premiered on Jan. 23, is adapted from a popular webtoon of the same name. It follows Yoon Ga-min (Hwang Min-hyun), a student who finds fighting easier than studying. To survive the grueling entrance exams at his underperforming school, he forms a study group. The series explores how Ga-min and his peers grow as they work toward their goals.

Global Popularity and Positive Reactions: Why Study Group is a Must-Watch

The show has been praised for its strong character relationships and exciting school-action sequences. These factors contributed to the success of Study Group, which ranked as the No. 1 show on Viu, Asia’s largest regional streaming service.

The series became the top-subscribed show in Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia. It also ranked third in Hong Kong, fifth in Singapore, and eighth in the Philippines. This proves the growing global love for K-school dramas.

Hwang Min-hyun, known for his role in the 2023 drama My Lovely Liar, has scored another hit with Study Group.

Director Lee's Insight: What’s Next for Study Group and Season 2?

This series is particularly meaningful for Director Lee. He had previously directed Miracle: Letters to the President (2021) and Be With You (2018). However, Study Group was more than just a show with high viewership—it also created new opportunities for the actors.

“I’m very pleased that so many people enjoyed the show. These last five weeks have felt like a dream,” Lee said. “It was really amazing to see people not only love the show but also become attached to the actors. This time, I was able to see fan reactions on social media (I usually avoid reading novels on release day). It was really fun.”

Hwang Min-hyun's Future Plans: What's Next for the Star?

Hwang Min-hyun felt sorry that he couldn’t help promote the show while serving in the military. However, he is already looking forward to a second season. He even mentioned that he wants to train and bulk up more for his role.

Min-hyun is very excited to work,” Lee said. “He’s never had a monotonous, routine life, so doing the same thing every day in the military drove him crazy. It’s great that he’s using his time wisely and preparing for the future.”

Ga-min’s Uncle and the Possibility of Season 2: What’s Next?

Some fans wondered why the type of Study Group that Ga-min has was not really featured in the formal plans. Director Lee Jang-hoon describes why:

“In another work titled Hanlim Gym, Ga-min’s uncle is, in fact, the main character. He laid low; I didn’t want to reveal an actor and have it kind of ignore the story, so I decided to keep him somewhat under wraps for the time being. We hope to introduce him in Season 2,” he said.

The show has not stopped receiving great feedback, leading fans to wonder if the show will receive a second season.

“Honestly, I wasn’t thinking about Season 2 when the show came out. After working on this project for two and a half years, I wanted to work on something new,” Lee explained. “But the last five weeks have left me feeling like, ‘Am I supposed to keep telling this story?’”

He also spoke of his deepening bond with the actors.

“I’ve come to really love the cast, especially Hwang Min-hyun. Now I’d be down to do another season, but only if we can do better than Season 1. Having a great script is the top thing,” he said.

However, a Tving official clarified, “Season 2 has been confirmed.”
